Faculty of Law

St. Basilios Theological College, established in 2023 in Dibre Berhan, Ethiopia, is one of the modern higher education institutions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC). In addition to its theological programs, the college offers undergraduate-level legal education through its Faculty of Law. The Faculty of Law is dedicated to producing graduates who are not only skilled in secular law but also deeply rooted in the teachings and traditions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. These graduates are equipped to uphold the rights and interests of the Church while providing both legal and spiritual services to the community. The regular program requires five years of study (ten semesters), while the extension program spans six years (eleven semesters). The program comprises 183 credit hours, culminating in the award of a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) የሕግ ባችለር ድግሪ upon successful completion.

Objectives

  1. Produce Ethical Lawyers: To train qualified and professionally ethical lawyers who can serve the Church in the field of law, combining knowledge of both Church and secular law.
  2. Uphold Church Interests: To equip graduates with the skills to protect the legal rights and interests of the Church.
  3. Promote Justice: To demonstrate that the Church is a source of law and justice, fostering a culture of fairness and ethical practice.
  4. Integrate Spiritual and Legal Services: To enable graduates to provide both legal and spiritual services, such as preaching, mediation, and dispute resolution within the Church.
  5. Educate on Church Law: To produce graduates who can teach and advise on Church law and its application in various contexts.
